Why Your Google Business Profile Is Losing You $40K/Year in Roofing Revenue

Most roofing contractors are unknowingly leaving a full-time employee's worth of revenue on the table. Here are the 6 GBP mistakes we see on almost every audit — and how to fix them.

Cordero Martinez ·

Most home service contractors in Knoxville have a Google Business Profile. Almost none of them have it right.

We’ve audited over 200 GBPs across HVAC, roofing, plumbing, and real estate — and the same six errors appear on roughly 85% of them. Each one bleeds revenue. Combined, they can cost a Knoxville business $30,000 to $50,000 per year in lost leads that went to a better-optimized competitor.

The Primary Category Problem

The single biggest lever is your primary category. GBP gives you one primary category and up to nine secondary categories — and most contractors either choose the wrong primary or leave secondary categories blank entirely.

An HVAC company in Knoxville listing as “Heating Contractor” when 70% of their revenue comes from AC repair is leaving map pack rankings on the table. Categories drive which searches you’re eligible to appear for in the local pack.

Your Description Field Is Wasted Space

The description field is treated as filler by most businesses. It shouldn’t be. Google reads your description for keyword relevance, and it’s one of the few fields you fully control.

Write 750 characters of specific, locally-relevant copy. Mention your Knoxville service areas by name. Mention your core services explicitly. Mention Knoxville neighborhoods you serve. Don’t stuff keywords — write for the customer first, but be deliberate.

Photos Are a Ranking Signal

Photos aren’t just aesthetics — they’re a ranking signal. Businesses with 100+ photos get dramatically more views and direction requests than those with fewer than 10.

Post weekly at minimum. Show your trucks, your team, your finished work in Knoxville homes and businesses. Use geo-tagged photos when possible. Google timestamps photo activity — fresh content signals an active, legitimate business serving the local area.

Review Responses Matter More Than You Think

Google’s algorithm favors businesses that actively engage with their reviews. Responding to every review — positive and negative — signals legitimacy and customer focus.

More importantly, it influences whether Knoxville prospects trust you enough to call. A roofing company with 4.9 stars and visible owner responses dominates trust signals against a competitor with 4.7 stars and radio silence.

The Post Cadence Nobody Does

GBP posts — updates, offers, events — keep your profile active in Google’s eyes. Aim for two posts per week. They don’t need to be elaborate. A photo of a completed job in Farragut with a one-sentence description and a CTA is enough. Consistency over perfection.

Take Control of Your Q&A Section

The Q&A section on your GBP is publicly editable — anyone can add questions, and anyone can answer them. Including your competitors.

Take ownership by seeding it with 10 to 15 common customer questions and answering them yourself. Monitor it weekly. This is one of the most overlooked sections in Knoxville local search.

Fix these six things before touching anything else. The ROI is faster and more certain than any paid campaign you could run in the Knoxville market.
